Kershaw County Criminal Court Cases
Kershaw County criminal court cases do not all begin or remain in one docket. The Court of General Sessions is the criminal side of Circuit Court and handles felonies and other serious charges. The Kershaw County Magistrate Court handles matters within summary jurisdiction. It also issues arrest and search warrants, sets bail, and conducts preliminary hearings. Camden, Elgin, and Bethune each have a municipal court for ordinance and summary matters within that court's authority.
The right Kershaw County custodian depends on the venue. The Kershaw County Clerk of Court keeps General Sessions files. Magistrate and municipal clerks control their own criminal case records. The Fifth Circuit Solicitor prosecutes General Sessions matters, but the prosecutor's office is not a substitute for the clerk's filed docket. A sheriff report or jail booking is also separate. Those sources describe the event and custody stage, while the court file tracks filed charges, hearings, pleas, rulings, disposition, and sentence.
Kershaw County Criminal Court Venues
The Kershaw County Courthouse brings several parts of the criminal process under one roof at 1121 Broad Street in Camden. General Sessions records are handled through the Clerk of Court in Room 313. Magistrate Court is in Room 202. The Fifth Circuit Solicitor's Kershaw office is in the same courthouse. This shared address can help with a known case, but each office still performs a different role.
A Kershaw County municipal charge may stay with Camden, Elgin, or Bethune rather than appear as a General Sessions case. The South Carolina Judicial Branch warns that only some municipal courts contribute records to Public Index. If a Kershaw County court search produces no result, identify the arresting agency and alleged venue before concluding that no case exists. The municipal clerk may hold the only useful docket.

Searching Kershaw County Case Records
The free Kershaw Public Index is the best online first stop. Cookies and JavaScript must be enabled, and case details may need a pop-up exception. The statewide court-record search gateway accepts a county, city, or ZIP code, then routes the reader to the selected venue. Neither route is a consolidated South Carolina rap sheet.
- Open the direct Kershaw Public Index or enter Kershaw in the statewide gateway and select the correct court.
- Use a known case number when possible. Otherwise, search the party name and compare court, year, and case type.
- Open the matching case and review filed charges, event history, current status, and the disposition field.
- Check the Kershaw court roster when a scheduled General Sessions appearance is the main question.
- Ask the proper clerk for a missing document, an offline file, or a certified copy of the official Kershaw County court record.
The gateway itself has a short set of verified Kershaw County controls. Public Index offers more case detail after the venue is chosen, but the research did not open any private case or invent fields that the live interface did not expose.
| Field label | Type | Required | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| County, City, or Zip Code | Text | Not stated | Enter Kershaw or a municipality, then choose a venue |
| Submit | Button | Yes to proceed | Displays matching court and county choices |
| View Case Records | Link or button | Yes to open index | Launches Public Index with cookies and JavaScript enabled |
The official Public Index source supplied the page's search-interface image.
That interface is a viewing tool. A certified court file still comes from the clerk.
Reading Kershaw Court Case Numbers
A Kershaw County case number points to the correct record family. South Carolina summary-court numbers follow the form (yyyy)A(CC)(xxxxxxxx). Kershaw County's code is 28, so A28 identifies a Kershaw summary matter. General Sessions and Common Pleas use (yyyy)(tt)(CC)(xxxxx), with GS marking General Sessions and CP marking Common Pleas. The year and court code make a known-file request far more exact than a broad name request.
Do not treat similar names as proof of identity. Compare the court, filing year, charge, and event dates. If a number is incomplete, the official case search help explains the formats. This check matters because the clerk does not conduct broad person-level civil and criminal searches at the counter. The office can inspect or copy a known public file.
Note: A28 marks Kershaw summary court; GS identifies General Sessions, the criminal side of Circuit Court.
Inside a Kershaw County Case File
A Kershaw County criminal case file is centered on a prosecution, not merely an arrest. The verified Public Index schema includes court and case number, filing date, type, status, parties, charges, event history, disposition, and sentence when those fields are populated. Bond, financial entries, and a scheduled proceeding may also appear. Visibility varies by case and court.
| Case number and court | Identifies the venue, filing year, and court record to request. |
|---|---|
| Filed charge | Shows the charge accepted into the court case, which may differ from the arrest charge. |
| Docket events | Records hearings, motions, actions, and other case activity in date order. |
| Bond information | Shows bond data when the court system has populated it. |
| Disposition and date | States the court outcome, such as dismissal, acquittal, plea, or conviction. |
| Sentence and finances | Records the court consequence and financial entries when available. |
A Kershaw County docket label can be brief. “Disposition” means the result of a charge. “Nolle prosequi” means the prosecutor ended it. An acquittal is a not-guilty result, while a dismissal ends the case without a conviction. The clerk's filed document is the best source when a short online label does not answer what happened.
Kershaw County Court Copy Options
The Kershaw court-records office publishes $1 per page and $2 for certification. A written search carries a $20 nonrefundable fee. The clerk then invoices copy and certification charges, requires payment before mailing, and rejects personal checks. A cashier's check or money order is the safer mailed method. Cash is also listed for accepted payment.
Another clerk page contains older, conflicting copy language of 50 cents and $1. Call 803-425-7223 before sending funds. Files that are not online require two days' notice. The clerk is in Room 313 at 1121 Broad Street, Camden, and is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The General Sessions extension is 5485. No official email-copy or bulk-data channel was found.

How a Criminal Case Moves
An arrest does not set the final court charge. The prosecutor reviews the law-enforcement material, and the filed charge may change. General Sessions matters can involve grand-jury action before the case proceeds. An arraignment is the formal charge-and-plea stage. Pretrial activity may include motions, evidence issues, negotiations, and scheduled hearings. The case then reaches a plea or trial, a disposition, and a sentence if there is a conviction.

A court roster shows scheduled activity, not an outcome. A plea agreement is a negotiated proposal subject to the court. A “true bill” means the grand jury returned an indictment; a “no bill” means it declined. Check later docket entries before reading any one event as the end of the case.
Kershaw Court Charges Can Change
A Kershaw County arrest record may list the officer's initial charges, while the court case shows what the solicitor filed. Those lists can differ without either record being false. A charge may be amended, dismissed, or replaced. The docket's disposition attaches to the filed charge, so it is the better source for the legal outcome. The arrest entry remains evidence of a custody event, not guilt.
The Fifth Circuit Solicitor also operates diversion programs that can affect how a case ends. Its Pre-Trial Intervention program has eligibility rules, intake duties, and published fees. Participation is not the same as a conviction, and completion may open a separate expungement route. The official PTI description supplied the program image shown here.
The program source helps explain why a final court result may not resemble the charge first seen after arrest.
Case Record Access & Restrictions
South Carolina's Freedom of Information Act provides access to many existing public records, but judicial files remain under court custody and court rules. Juvenile cases, expunged material, sealed content, protected victim information, and other sensitive details may be restricted. A public search is therefore a convenience view, not a promise that every filing is visible online.
Beginning January 1, 2026, the South Carolina Judicial Branch stopped displaying home addresses on Public Index. That change protects a field in the public view. It does not mean the whole clerk file was destroyed. When a Kershaw County criminal court case does not appear, confirm the venue, ask the municipal clerk if appropriate, and then ask the record-holding clerk whether the file is offline or restricted.
For a statewide person-history question, SLED CATCH is a separate channel. It does not supply a Kershaw County docket's event documents. Missing fingerprints or dispositions can also cause its result to differ from the clerk file, so CATCH should not replace a court-case search.
Kershaw County Solicitor Case Role
The Fifth Circuit Solicitor prosecutes Kershaw County General Sessions matters. Its Kershaw office is at 1121 Broad Street and can address prosecution-program questions, but it is not the clerk's copy counter. The official solicitor contact page supplied the office image.
The distinction keeps a records request on track: use the clerk for the filed case, the solicitor for its prosecution programs, and the arresting agency for its own report.
